Police seized an array of potential fraud evidence — including a scanning device allegedly used to steal information from financial cards — during an arrest at a Larkspur gas station on Jan. 17, 2024. (Central Marin Police Authority)
Central Marin police officers arrested a man suspected of using an electronic device to steal credit card information.
Police contacted the suspect Wednesday after he allegedly tried to use a stolen card to buy fuel at Marin Gas on Magnolia Avenue, said Sgt. Jeff Peterson. A search revealed a kind of scanner that can be used to extract information from cards with magnetic strips.
Police also found suspected burglary tools, Visa gift cards and other gift cards. The man’s truck held four containers with gasoline that police suspect he purchased fraudulently.
Jose Manuel Primero, 21, of Richmond was arrested on suspicion of grand theft, possessing burglary tools and possessing an illegal scanning device. He is in custody at the Marin County Jail with bail set at $10,000, according to jail records.
Primero is on probation in Contra Costa County for theft-related crimes, police said.
