Tips on adjusting children to Daylight Saving Time
SATURDAY. OVER TO YOU CHELSEA. THANK YOU. WELL, DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME BEGAN OVERNIGHT AND THIS TIME OF YEAR CAN REALLY AFFECT SLEEP SCHEDULES FOR ANYONE, INCLUDING CHILDREN. JOINING US THIS MORNING WITH TIPS ON HOW TO ADJUST THE SLEEP MEDICINE SPECIALIST AT JOHNS HOPKINS CHILDREN’S CENTER, DOCTOR DOCTOR CECILIA MELENDEZ. GOOD MORNING. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME TODAY. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE. SO THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION WOULD HAVE BEEN TO START PREPARING EARLY. BUT IF YOU FORGOT IT, WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP KIDS ADJUST? NOW WITH THE NEW HOURS? SO EXACTLY. SO WE ALWAYS SAY THAT THE BEST PREPARATION IS MOVING BEDTIME EARLIER BY A FEW MINUTES BY 15 MINUTES. IN THIS FEW DAYS BEFORE DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME. BUT NOW THAT IT HAS COME, THERE ARE STILL SOME THINGS THAT CAN HELP. UM, PARENTS HELP THEIR CHILDREN SLEEP BETTER. FIRST OFF IS STICKING TO A GOOD SLEEP SCHEDULE. WE DO SAY TRY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. NOT TO SLEEP IN AND EXPOSURE TO LIGHT IN THE MORNING IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. KEEPING THE KIDS ACTIVE DURING THE DAY WOULD HELP AS WELL. AND AT THE SAME TIME THAT WE EXPOSE THEM TO BRIGHT LIGHT DURING THE DAYTIME OR IN THE MORNING. AT NIGHTTIME, IT’S THE OPPOSITE. IN THE HOUR OR TWO BEFORE BEDTIME, WE SAY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, UM, NO MORE ELECTRONICS. THE ROOM SHOULD BE DARK AND NICE AND QUIET, SO THOSE THINGS CAN HELP IN GENERAL WITH, UM, PUTTING KIDS BACK ON A REGULAR SLEEP SCHEDULE. YEAH, BECAUSE THE LIGHT AND THE DARKNESS REALLY AFFECT OUR SLEEP SCHEDULES AND OUR BODY CLOCK. RIGHT. EXACTLY, EXACTLY. LIGHT IS A VERY BIG CUE AS TO WHEN OUR BODY THINKS IT’S TIME TO WAKE UP. AND WHEN OUR BODY THINKS IT’S TIME TO SLEEP, IT’S THE CUE FOR OUR BODY TO PRODUCE MELATONIN. DARKNESS. AND WITH DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME, IT IS DARKER IN THE MORNING AND LIGHTER AT NIGHT. SO IT’S SORT OF LIKE COUNTER, UM, INTUITIVE TO OUR BODY’S NATURAL, UM, RHYTHM. AND LOOK, SLEEP IS IMPORTANT FOR EVERYBODY, BUT ESPECIALLY FOR KIDS. NOT ONLY DO THEY GET GROGGY AND CRANKY WHEN THEY DON’T GET ENOUGH SLEEP, BUT IT REALLY CAN AFFECT THEIR DEVELOPMENT EXACTLY, EXACTLY. WE SEE KIDS WHO ARE SLEEP DEPRIVED. THEY HAVE A LOT OF BEHAVIOR ISSUES DURING THE DAY BECAUSE THEY HAVE PROBLEMS WITH EMOTION REGULATION. THEIR NOT MAYBE AS SHARP AS, UM, IF THEY GET UM, SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF NIGHTTIME SLEEP, THEY’RE MORE IMPULSIVE. IF THEY ARE SLEEP DEPRIVED AND, AND LOOK REAL QUICK. THERE ARE A LOT OF DISCUSSIONS ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT WE SHOULD JUST GET RID OF DAYLIGHT SAVING ALTOGETHER, OR JUST KEEP DAYLIGHT SAVING AND NOT ROLL IT BACK IN THE FALL. WHAT WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT? SO, YOU KNOW, THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF SLEEP MEDICINE CAME UP WITH A POSITION STATEMENT SAYING THAT, YOU KNOW, DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME IS NOT REALLY, UM, CONDUCIVE TO GOOD SLEEP HEALTH. UM, AND I AM MORE OF THE OPINION THAT, YES, WE SHOULD STICK TO THE REGULAR STANDARD TIME VERSUS SWITCHING BACK AND FORTH AND GOING TO DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME IN THE SPRING. ALL RIGHT.
