Beaverton man indicted on mail theft, aggravated identity theft charges

A Beaverton Police Department investigation that began with the arrest of a wanted man led officers to recover hundreds of pieces of suspected stolen mail, credit cards, passports and more.
The incident began Aug. 14 when a Beaverton police officer was patrolling near the Redwood Creek Apartments on Southwest Windmill Drive and recognized the suspect, Joseph Daniel Gregori, 38, of Beaverton exiting a vehicle.
“The officer knew Gregori had an outstanding felony warrant related to burglary, aggravated theft, forgery and conspiracy charges stemming from investigations in Clackamas County,” said a Beaverton Police Department statement.
Gregori was taken into custody without incident.
Police discovered evidence that connected Gregori to the fraudulent use of a victim’s credit card, including purchases at GameStop and other businesses.
Officers subsequently obtained a search warrant for the vehicle Gregori had been occupying.
That’s when they discovered property they believe connected to mail theft, identity theft, forgery and other crimes including:
• Hundreds of pieces of suspected stolen mail and identity-theft related documents.
• At least 34 credit cards that appeared to have been removed from mail, along with additional unopened credit cards.
• Numerous stolen and altered checks, including checks connected to individuals and businesses.
• Three U.S. passports not belonging to Gregori.
• Driver licenses, Social Security cards and other personal identifying information belonging to multiple victims.
• Counterfeit U.S. Postal Service master keys.
• Thousands of collectible trading cards, including Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering and sports cards.
• Approximately 1.8 grams of suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
• Burglary tools.
“Investigators have identified numerous potential victims in Oregon and Washington and are continuing to determine the full scope of the suspected criminal activity,” according to Beaverton police. “Evidence recovered during the investigation included financial documents and personally identifying information connected to dozens of individuals and businesses.”
Gregori was lodged at the Washington County jail and on Aug. 21 was indicted by a Washington County grand jury on charges of aggravated identity theft, mail theft, fraudulent use of credit card, identity theft, possession of a burglary tool and unlawful possession of methamphetamine. He remained in custody as of Monday evening, Aug. 31.
Because investigators recovered counterfeit U.S. Postal Service master keys and a significant amount of suspected stolen mail, information from the investigation is also being forwarded to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
