ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – There seems to be a national day for just about everything, from National Hot Dog Day to National Clean Your Desk Day.
Here’s one more. This Sunday, Aug. 23, is known as National Cheap Flight Day.
So, can you really save money on flights on this day?
We asked travel expert and founder of FoodFamilyTravel.com, Christianne Klein. She explains it’s the beginning of a window when prices typically drop.
“This is based on historical data that we’ve seen in the past on what is the start of a booking window of opportunity to take advantage of those off-peak prices,” she explained.
“The real booking window people should be keeping an eye on is Aug. 23 to around Sept. 10. I like to think of it like Labor Day.”
Klein says travelers can typically find significant savings.
“For holiday travel, I would look to see if you can get around 10%. If you can, take it. What we’re seeing from a dipping side domestically we’re seeing 12% to 20%. Internationally, you can take advantage of fares up to 40% off for September and October,” Klein said.
After Labor Day, Klein says airfares can start to climb again.
Before you book any trip, she suggests using tools like AI to compare overall costs at multiple airports.
“If I’m going to book a rental car, and I’m going to book a flight, and I know I’m going to have all those extra fees tacked on, what does that look like at all of these other regional airports?” she suggests.
And use tools like Google Flights to track your options.
“Look today at what those fares are, make a note of it, put on those price alerts. As we hit the 23rd into that window, they could hit 10%, 12%, 20%,” said Klein.
She says that can be the sweet spot, between National Cheap Flight Day on Aug. 23 and Labor Day, to see savings in your sights.
