It appears that the long-stalled, multi-billion dollar Red Line crosstown rail service is back on the table. Last week, luminaries appeared on stage for the Greater Baltimore Committee’s transit summit and hailed its return (”Lutherville Station: How promoting transit around Baltimore is easier said than done,” Oct. 19).
However, it’s hard for me to put too much energy into that immediate discussion, pro or con. As The Baltimore Sun has also reported, fare vending machines at Baltimore area train and bus stations will be unable to accept credit cards for the next 14 months due to a “software update” (”Fare vending machines at MTA bus, subway and light rail stations to stop taking credit cards until December 2024,” Oct. 9).
If that’s the speed that transportation infrastructure projects take in Baltimore we have many more decades left to beat each other up.
