FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – The West Fargo Police Department has obtained new technology that can be used to detect hidden scam devices on point-of-sale terminals at retail locations and fuel pumps.
The initiative aims to protect consumers from falling victim to fraud caused by hidden skimmers and shimmers that illegally obtain financial information from credit or debit cards.
Business visits available
Local businesses are encouraged to sign up online for visits from detectives with the Investigations Unit who will utilize this technology and provide additional education on this scam.
Checkout skimmers, often designed as overlays placed on point-of-sale terminals, can transmit data wirelessly. These devices can be found in various businesses, including grocery stores, convenience stores and other retailers.
Fuel pump skimmers, typically installed inside the pump, attach internally and are invisible to customers. These devices store payment card information, which scammers later retrieve or transmit wirelessly.
Chief cites rise in fraud calls
“This outreach is imperative as our officers are responding to more fraud calls for service in recent years,” said Chief Pete Nielsen.
“Illegal credit card skimming can have devastating impacts on innocent, law-abiding citizens who are victimized by this fraud. This technology is another tool our department is using to keep our residents informed while taking these scam devices off the street.”
In 2025, law enforcement personnel across the country removed more than 400 illegal skimming devices during these operations, preventing an estimated potential fraud loss of more than $428 million.
How residents can protect themselves
Residents can take precautions to protect themselves against these devices, including inspecting ATMs, point-of-sale terminals and other card readers. Look for anything loose, crooked, damaged or scratched. Do not use a card reader if anything appears unusual. Whenever possible, use tap-to-pay technology or use debit and credit cards with chip technology.
