AAA says August fuel prices were the highest on record for the month. Those prices are stretching into September making holiday travel more expensive.
MACON, Ga. — As Labor Day weekend approaches, some Central Georgia residents say rising gas prices are forcing them to rethink their travel plans and everyday driving.
Leigh Ann Lee from Macon is looking forward to slowing down over the holiday weekend, but she is not looking forward to the cost of filling up.
“Not real happy, not real happy,” Lee said.
Lee expects to spend nearly $500 on fuel for her car and camper. Although she can afford the expense, she said the high cost still affects her budget.
Tony and Pat Moss from Macon plan to stay close to home this Labor Day weekend. They said they have recently started filling their car only halfway.
“$40 would fill this up right here. But now you can take $20, it won’t even hardly get us to half,” Tony said.
The couple said they use their car mainly for essential trips, including grocery shopping and doctor’s appointments.
When asked whether they fill up their tank completely, Tony said they do so only when they plan to travel a long distance.
“Can’t right now. Unless we’re going way out, then we’ll do it,” he said.
Lee said fuel costs have also forced her to cut back on other activities.
“When we travel, it does take away from extracurricular activities,” she said.
AAA recommends several ways drivers can save money at the pump, including comparing prices at different stations, using fuel rewards and loyalty programs and considering cash-payment discounts.
AAA’s Montrae Waiters also advised drivers to slow down, avoid aggressive driving, keep their tires properly inflated and stay current on vehicle maintenance.
“Shop around because gas prices can vary significantly between stations,” Waiters said. “It’s going to be important you use your fuel rewards and loyalty programs whenever possible. Consider paying with cash, slow down and avoid aggressive driving to improve fuel economy— and keep those tires properly inflated and stay current on vehicle maintenance.”
