We’re all looking to save a bit of extra cash right now, with switching to a cheaper supermarket among the ways some are cutting back.
However, there are also a few ways to save even more money on your shop – you just need some insider information.
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, has shared her trade secrets for reducing the price of your basket at the German supermarket, and it’s worth taking note.
From spotting discounts on everyday items to timing your visit to get the best deals on fruit and veg, here are her top tips.
See red for reduced
As you’re walking around Aldi, look for red stickers signalling big discounts.
If you can, try to shop more frequently for fresh produce too, as this is the best way to hedge your bets and get your hands on the best savings.
Julie says: ‘All of Aldi’s UK stores mark down perishable products by up to 75% on their last day of life, including bread, meat, and produce, while imperfectly packaged items like rice, cereal, and tinned food are discounted by 30%.’
While some people think there’s a specific time when stickered bargains are put out, at Aldi it’s on a rolling basis.
‘Reduction times vary by store, and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis,’ adds Julie.
Stick to own-brand products
We all know own-brand products are cheaper, but switching from big brands to Aldi’s own label items will save more than just a few pennies.
‘Last year, analysis of Kantar data revealed how Brits could be spending a premium of £15.1billion a year for branded items in Big Four supermarkets instead of Aldi’s exclusive own-label products,’ explains Julie.
‘That’s a whopping £45 a month, or £542 a year, that could be saved by switching to own-label brands at Aldi.’
Make the most of Super Six
By tailoring your meal plans to include the fruit and veggies included in Aldi’s Super Six deal.
Every fortnight, the supermarket selects six items which are sold at super low prices – this week, for example, you can get your hands on avocados for 59p each, a pack of mini apples for 69p, or 500g large vine tomatoes for 99p.
Too Good to Go
Earlier this year Aldi rolled out its partnership with the world’s largest surplus food platform, Too Good To Go, across all of its UK stores.
Julie recommends getting your fill of the ‘Magic Bags’ available, which contain a range of grocery products that are approaching their sell-by or use-by dates at less than a third of the price.
These bargain stashes cost just £3.30 each for at least £10 worth of food: simply download the free Too Good To Go app and search for your nearby Aldi store, before reserving a bag to collect at an allotted time.
