Two Halifax County natives who have carved out successful careers in the worlds of finance and education will return to town next month to keynote the annual meeting banquet of the Halifax County Community Federal Credit Union.
Featured speakers at the event will be Steve Holeman Jr. and Corey Holeman, both graduates of Halifax County High School. They are the sons of Steve and Cornell Holeman of Virgilina.
The credit union annual banquet, set to begin at 6:00 p.m. on November 9 at the TJM Center in South Boston, will be the first gathering of the organization since the death of its founder, longtime Tri-County Community Action Agency director William E. Coleman. Tickets are now on sale for $25 if purchased before October 31, and $35 afterwards. Call the Credit Union at 575-7916, ext. 2 for tickets. The community is invited.
After graduating from HCHS in the 1990s, the Holeman brothers both ended up in the financial industry after completing their undergraduate studies, Corey at James Madison University and Steve at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Corey, who earned his MBA at Penn State University, began his corporate investment career at UBS Private Banking in New York and later became a portfolio manager for The Vanguard Group, overseeing $5 billion in company assets and becoming the first Black equities portfolio manager in the company.
He later relocated to Virginia in 2006 to become the CFO of Welburn Management Co, a restaurant franchisee with 25 McDonalds restaurants. After four years he and his wife Courtney purchased their own first McDonalds restaurant. As they branched out on their own, Holeman Enterprises experienced rapid growth, and currently owns nine McDonalds restaurant franchises in Fredericksburg and Richmond. The company employs approximately 400 people.
His restaurant ownership experience led to an appetite for other entrepreneurial pursuits. In 2008, Holeman developed a partnership as co-owner and part-time CFO of Federal Conferencing, Inc., a start-up firm providing event planning, housing, and registration services to the Armed Forces. As the company’s financial strategy leader, he was able to help steer it towards significant growth, earning the ranking of no. #2 on the Inc. Magazine’s list of the 500 Fastest Growing Companies in America in 2013.
His most recent business venture was CCJJ Logistics Co, a FedEx Ground contracting business established in 2019. Over a three-year period, Holeman was able to grow revenues by more than 340% and expand the fleet from 17 to 57 vehicles. The Holemans successfully sold the business in 2022.
They live in Woodbridge. The couple have two children, Jordan and Jalen.

Steve Holeman Jr. is a dedicated finance professional and educator with a passion for helping individuals and businesses make informed financial decisions. After achieving success in the financial world, he joined the faculty of Virginia State University as an instructor in the Accounting and Finance Department, and continues to teach.
Born and raised in Halifax County, his fascination with finance and economics began at an early age. He graduated from Halifax County High School in June 1990.
Steve pursued his higher education at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. His academic journey ignited his enthusiasm for the field and set him on a path to becoming a finance expert.
Steve’s career in finance started as a new account representative in a regional financial services company (Wheat First Butcher Singer) shortly after completing his undergraduate studies. His role involved providing financial advice and guidance to individuals and families, helping them navigate the complexities of budgeting, savings and investing for their future. Steve’s commitment to helping others achieve financial success quickly became evident, earning him a reputation for his knowledge and client -centric approach.
In parallel with his professional career, Steve developed a strong interest in finance education. He recognized the importance of financial literacy and decided to share his expertise with others, joining the faculty at Virginia State University.
Over the course of 15 years, Steve has had a significant impact on the lives of countless students. He has taught a range of finance courses, Including Personal Finance, Corporate Finance, Investments and Principles of Finance. His engaging teaching style, real world experience, and dedication to student success have made him a beloved figure among both undergraduate and graduate students.
Steve Holeman’s contributions to finance education extend beyond the classroom. He has worked with several individuals and families on various finance topics. Additionally, Steve has participated in numerous financial literacy initiatives, partnering with community organizations to promote financial well -being in his local community.
Outside of his finance career, Steve enjoys family, playing golf and reading podcasts. He believes in maintaining a healthy work-life balance and often emphasizes the importance of financial planning in achieving one’s personal goals.
