Successful technical implementation is only one part of bringing innovative solutions to market. I3 Instrument projects and participating SMEs also need to consider how promising innovations can access the financing required for further deployment and growth. Investment agencies, promotional and commercial banks, public financial institutions, and private investors can support projects at different stages – from providing early feedback on financing needs and business models to assessing investment readiness, identifying suitable financing instruments, and supporting follow-on financing.
During the session, we will explore:
- when and why to engage different types of financial stakeholders throughout the I3 Instrument project lifecycle;
- what financing actors look for when assessing innovative companies and investment projects;
- how investment agencies and financial institutions can contribute before an SME or project is formally seeking finance;
- how I3 Instrument projects can better prepare participating SMEs for follow-on financing and commercialisation;
- common barriers that prevent technically mature innovations from becoming bankable or investable; and
- practical approaches to linking I3 Instrument funding with complementary public and private financing instruments.
The event will combine short perspectives from financing and innovation stakeholders with an interactive discussion. Speakers will focus on concrete experiences, financing requirements, and lessons learned, while a substantial part of the session will be dedicated to moderated discussion and audience Q&A.
