Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies arrested two men in Washington Township last week who are suspected of identity theft.
Dakwan Young, 24, and Derek Russell, 26, both of Detroit were apprehended on May 16 at the Enclave Apartments near 27 Mile Road and Old Van Dyke Avenue.
According to a press release from the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area and made contact with the suspects and immediately noticed the strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
Further investigation revealed the multiple ID’s, credit cards, gift cards and social security cards in the vehicle, all with different names on them. MCSO deputies also located an unregistered handgun, a credit card reader and other miscellaneous suspected stolen property in the vehicle.
Both suspects were taken into custody without incident and lodged at the Macomb County Jail.
Russell and Young are each charged with one felony count of obtaining/possessing/transferring personal identifying information to commit identity theft; three felony counts of stealing and retaining without consent a financial transaction device; and one count misdemeanor receiving and concealing stolen property less than $200.
Russell is also charged with one 90-day misdemeanor of unlawful use of a license plate. In addition, Young is charged with two felony weapons counts for possession of firearms and ammunition by a prohibited person.
Both suspects were arraigned at 42-1 Romeo District Court. Russell’s bond was set at $10,000, cash/surety, and Young’s bond was set at $20,000, cash/surety. Both suspects remain lodged at the Macomb County Jail. A probable cause hearing scheduled for May 28 and a preliminary examination for June 4 both in front of Judge Jennifer Andary.
