Your AAdvantage Credit Card Loyalty Points Aren’t Posting Yet This Month, Just Be Patient

American Airlines announced that loyalty points earned towards status with their credit cards would credit differently effective with the end of the member year in February 2024.
- Credit card spend done in February would count towards last year’s status
- Credit card spend done in March would count towards this new year’s status
- That’s independent of when your credit card statement closes
American’s status year runs March through February. All loyalty points earned before the end of February count towards that year’s status. In the past what mattered was the date Barclays or Citibank sent the batch over to American.
Say that your credit card statement closed February 5, and wouldn’t close again until March 5. You used to expect that spending done on the card February 6 though the end of February would actually count towards the following year‘s status, since it posted in the following year. That changed.
Under the new approach, card charges dated in February count towards status in one member year, while card charges in March count towards status in the next member year – regardless of your credit card statement close date. In the past, savvy customers would decide for themselves when spend counted by changing their Citibank statement end date. That no longer works.
With this change though things haven’t posted correctly yet.
- March-ending statements have been sending over the redeemable miles
- But American hasn’t been promptly posting loyalty points
People spent money in March, too, but even though their credit card statement ended and redeemable miles got posted to their account… no loyalty points.
The AAdvantage account summary page says, “Loyalty Points and miles earned from your March credit card statement will post separately.” Nonetheless, anxious members are contacting me daily for an update.
An American Airlines spokesperson explains that credit card batches sent over in March will be handled as follows:
- Last year’s loyalty points will post in March
- This new member year’s loyalty points will post in April
In greater detail,
American Airlines recognizes the value the AAdvantage program offers our customers and the benefits it provides to elevate their travel experience.
To ensure all AAdvantage members get their miles and Loyalty Points deposited correctly and in a timely manner, this year the process entailed several separate actions.
All Loyalty Points earned in February will post in March and all Loyalty Points earned in March will post in April.
The process results in more members earning status and Loyalty Point Rewards. As the new program year ramps up, we look forward to our members unlocking Loyalty Point Rewards and status toward an even better travel experience.
Here’s my “miles only” from a March card statement that closed:
Some of you will remember I was instantly approved for a new CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® [See rates and fees] in January, and I was spending towards that card’s initial bonus. My March statement close on that card had the loyalty points earned in February backdated:
Bottom-line is that they know about the issue and there’s a timeline to address it. We just need to be patient.
